Das Berliner Trio catfish row – benannt nach der als Schauplatz der Oper „Porgy and Bess“ berühmt gewordenen Straße – interpretiert Kompositionen des 1898 in New York geborenen George Gershwin auf ganz besondere Weise:
Im Zentrum steht die charismatische und wandelbare Stimme der Jazzsängerin ANETT LEVANDER, die von nur zwei Instrumenten begleitet wird: CHRISTIAN RAAKE am Saxophon und DIRK STEGLICH an der Bassklarinette.
George Gershwin bewegte sich als Komponist leichtfüßig zwischen verschiedenen Genres, komponierte – als einer der vielleicht genialsten „Melodien-Erfinder“ seiner Generation – sowohl unzählige Songs für Musical und Film als auch klassische Konzertwerke wie beispielsweise die „Rhapsody in Blue“, das Klavierkonzert in F-Dur, die sinfonische Dichtung „Ein Amerikaner in Paris“ oder die Oper „Porgy and Bess“. Heute gilt Gershwin als einer der zentralen Wegbereiter der zeitgenössischen amerikanischen Klassik und des „symphonic jazz“. An diesem Treffpunkt von Jazz und Klassik setzt auch das Ensemble catfish row an.
Große Orchesterbesetzung, satte Klavierakkorde, reichhaltig instrumentierte Jazzmelodien, die längst zu Standards geworden sind – wie können zwei Holzbläser und eine Sängerin all das in so sparsamer Besetzung wiedergeben? Die Antwort liegt in den raffinierten Arrangements von catfish row, in denen Gershwins Musik gleichsam im Taschenformat erklingt: Zurückgeführt auf das Wesentliche, durchsichtig und doch in ihrer ganzen Sinnlichkeit. Der Kunstgriff besteht unter anderem im Weglassen von Tönen, die dem Zuhörer durch den dichten Klangteppich von Bassklarinette und Saxophon suggeriert werden – doch soll hier nicht zu viel verraten werden: Hören Sie selbst…
